Catalogue Notes

A lawyer by profession, born in Exeter, England, John Edye Manning emigrated to Australia in 1829 to take up a position as registrar for the Supreme Court of New South Wales, and curator of intestate estates on behalf of the colony.

Beset by personal and professional financial difficulties, Manning was ultimately removed from his post in 1842, and in 1849 returned to England where he settled in Bristol, until his passing in 1870.
