Sotheby's Australia

Fine Asian, Australian & European Arts & Design

Arts & Design

The department of Arts & Design conducts two to three sales a year.  The auctions include many fine examples of Asian, Australian & European Art, Decorative Arts and Furniture.  Items include fine silver, glass, Chinese porcelain, carved jade, ornamental bronzes and antiquarian books.

Our knowledgeable team can help you buy and sell Chinese art, finding the perfect piece for your collection or the right price for the items you are electing to sell.  The catalogues for our Asian art sales contain exquisite works of art and design from across the continent, from Chinese porcelain and jades to Japanese watercolours. Those seeking to buy Asian art would do well to view our auctions regularly.

Recent sale highlights in Asian Art include $115,900 for a gilt copper figure of Hevajra and Nairatmya Sino-Tibetan or Mongolian, late 18th century or later.  $91,500 for a large cloisonné enamel yenyen vase late Ming/early Qing dynasty and $67,100 for an impressive blue and white 'Three Friends' jar Wanli mark and period.  Contact our specialists to discuss consigning with Sotheby's Australia and impress you with our results.

We also have experts in Australian and European arts and design including furniture, silver, glass, ceramics and antiquarian books, who assemble an impressive selection for our highly regarded auctions.  We frequently feature noteworthy design pieces from renowned European designers and artisans.

Sale highlights from Australia and Europe include the Highly Important Adelaide Hunt Club Cup of 1881 which achieved $207,400, and, continuing with racing in October 2016 we realised $109,800 for the 1985 Foster's Melbourne Cup which was presented to the winner by HRH The Prince of Wales.  The figural sculptures by Demétre Chiparus epitomise the elegance and dynamism of the Art Deco style and and a fine example of this was Antinea circa 1925 which sold for $115,900.  The market has responded well to significant antiquarian books with a first edition of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species selling for $58,560.  Contact our specialists to discuss consigning with Sotheby's Australia and impress you with our results.

For collectors of local and international works of art including paintings, our auctions feature the finest in historical and contemporary Australian art, including pieces significant to the development of art in this country and overseas.  In June 2017 we sold Nicolae Grigorescu's (Hay Carts) for $91,500.
