The Rae Rothfield Collection reflects the intelligence and passion of a collector with a global perspective, who possessed a deep and abiding interest in, and empathy for, contemporary Australian and international art.  A successful businesswoman with a deeply felt concern for the health and welfare of her local and broader community, Rae had a strong devotion (some would say compulsive addiction) to collect, display and share paintings, works on paper, and above all, sculpture, with her family, friends and more casual visitors to her home in Melbourne.

Geoffrey Smith, Chairman of Sotheby’s Australia commented: ‘We are honoured and privileged to offer The Rae Rothfield Collection for auction.  This rare and prestigious private collection was assembled with great enthusiasm and foresight over the past sixty years and represents defining moments in the achievements of some of the most influential and revered artists of the past century.  The collection is reflective of the empathy and love that Rae found in Modern and contemporary art from Australia and overseas.  It is a particular pleasure to see many of these important works offered to future passionate collectors.
