Given the billions of dollars invested on thoroughbred horseflesh each year, it seems puzzling that comparatively little value is given to racing memorabilia.

Even Melbourne Cup trophies more than a 100 years old are sold for apparently small amounts. For example, the 1899 trophy to be auctioned by Sotheby's Australia on April 6 has estimates of $60,000 to $80,000.
